"Thanksgiving" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-20 23:18:51

It’s my favorite holiday but not for the reasons one might think.  First off my little family gets together.  There aren’t many of us but that doesn’t matter.  My nieces are still young enough to truly be fun and we enjoy food and games.  There are no gifts involved so that bitter jealousy doesn’t usually come up (like it does at Christmas) over stuff.  Mostly though it is the one day (there are others of course) that I get to think about how despite all the crappy day to day things. I am thankful for my family. Usually. I am responsible for the potatoes.  One year. I mashed them.  Another year. I got those fingerling potatoes (but was warned not to tell my nieces what they were called).  Yet another year. I added horseradish and sour beat.  I’ve been back home for about 4 hours so I can finally write about it.  I decided to do creamed potatoes because I had the beat!  I put about eight potatoes through the glorious and then boiled them for 8 minutes.  After draining them. I mixed the potatoes with the beat and some Parmesan cheese that I grated in the glorious Magimix 3150!  They baked in the oven for 30 minutes. I went over to the Kroger on Red Bluff (in Pasadena) hoping to buy another turkey for 37 cents a pound (I have one already that I will create from raw material tomorrow) for the puppy girls.  No luck.  There was not a single turkey in the store — not even the slightly more expensive ones.  Actually virtually all of the meat was gone from the meat department.  Opportunity lost. I guess. At times it is difficult to stay cheerful on Thanksgiving.  I was reasonably successful until the bitter end.  Mom and sis were in full ‘we work harder than anyone on the planet/where are they (my brother sister-in-law and nieces) mode.  My sister naps while we wait for them to show up and then begrudges my sister-in-law’s nap after we have dinner.   She also is markedly upset that the in-laws undergo already done the turkey-made-with-hand-print thing with the girls earlier in the day.  She almost loses it when she finds out that my brother — traitor! — has taught the in-laws our family’s super-duper secret card game.  Sigh. I am funny per usual.  My oldest niece decides that I am weird or rather ‘werd’ as she wrote it down.  After she’s said that for the hundredth time. I declare that she ask my mom/granny about that.  Mom/granny under slight duress agrees with me that.

"Spoils, The - Spoiled by Spoils" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-07 15:07:15

Okay so I decided to do something. I was at home playing and getting bored playing WoW with my friends. I decided to continue to the card shop. I had been there yesterday meeting random populate and playing some games. I had also bought 2 constructed decks that day a gearsmith and a warlord. GS seemed desire they just change big guys. Warlords.. they be to undergo lots of damage stuff and have good stats. Anyway so when I was there. I wandered around. People were playing a WoW tournament. I saw a couple Naruto players there. It was busy. I was sporting my Vs starter be hoping someone would show me how to compete correctly. I also lugged Shadows Over Camelot just in inspect anybody was bet. But then I saw 2 spoils players in the approve; I decided to investigate. In the midsts of the chaotic store these two players were playing calmly and sternly. I asked them a couple questions. I was informed of a compose tournament for spoils. At first. I hesitated as I was the new guy. I probably wouldn't win. But then I said yes in the end. But then we got to choose between sealed and compose. I voted sealed with another. A third was indifferent and the fourth player wanted draft. So we went with sealed. You get a tournament pack. 2 boosters for $20. I opened my pack. I seperated my cards into the colors. Then I seperated the colors into characters tactics locations accommodate and items. I took very long time. I had only played sealed once before and it was for MTG a 40 card deck. But this time I had to make a 45 card deck. I asked around and got my resources to around 15-16. Then I decided to go with 10 tactics and 20 characters. I decided I wanted to play a deck with a good turn. I looked at gearsmith. They had pretty strong 7 cost cards and a 9 cost card as well. However. I had no in between cards. So that was removed. As for my warlord. I only had a few cards for that group as well. I decided to go with the banker arcanist and rogue. My rares were billionaire ghostly auditor. Beatrix Winterbottom missappropiation forge and ruthless platoon. I don't know what they do off the top of my continue. All I experience is that billionaire and machine were ROGUE. Beatrix and ghost were BANKER and platoon was Warlord. Warlord was taken out. Billionaire was also taken out because the threshold was 4 rogue resources. So I went with beatrix go and forge. measure was really running out and I had a whole bunch of cards. I decided to think like magic. I picked up removal cards from my set. I found most of them nearly all were banker. Then I pushed aside the be. Then I got my characters. I picked out the situational ones and that was that. My highest turn was 5. I found that A lot of my low cost characters were arcanist and had the middle to upper cost guys as rogue and banker. With my 46 card rogue-banker-arcanist deck. I decided to fight my foes. The first game was decrease. I was against Mike. He ran arcanist banker and warlord. I don't recall the details because I was too intent on focusing on my guys. All I bequeath was he did consistent alter to me driving me towards 12 or so HP. I barely scratched him. I was too focused on figuring out the situation to put out threats. One amazing thing that happened was when I put drink an ectological speculate suit on my money changer. For those that don't know these terms money changer is a guy who can draw a card by placing a -1/-1 counter on him. Being a 2/2 he would die due to 2 counters. However the conform to gives +1/+1 for each counter on the engrave it is attached to. That means money changer can use his ability as much as he wants to yet be a 2/2. What happened was I got a displace against Mike as I played slow. He should have won. The second bet was against Ben. He played. I can't recall the trades. Anyway. He had a arcanist that was a 1/1/3. What happens if it dies is that I would discard a card. He then played a warlord guy who does 2 alter the move he is placed to me a 2/1/3. Then I bequeath I tried to get my money combo out but it never happened. I messed up my play and what happened was we drew both of us having 15 life. My third game was against Matt from Fullerton. I was intimidated. He played rogue arcanist and warlord. The starting turn. I was scared. I threw away expensive cards during my mulligan and ended up with banker stuff. Right away he played the most expensive card in the set heist planner. He costs 3 to play and when he comes into play he can go through my deck and displace them in my get rid of arrange. He placed some removal I think. The turning point came when he placed a warlord. 6/2/3 Brash Basher on the handle. Then came my turn. I then played what changed the game - Summary judgement. What this card does is it destroys a engrave unless the opponent allows me to draw a be of cards equal to the strength of the card I picked. So again either he loses his 6 attack guy or he lets me displace 6 cards. 6 cards were drawn. On his turn. I ate 6 damage. Then came my turn. I played a 3 cost impeccable timing. Any.

"Mage Master - Review" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-30 16:41:58

Ratkins Games was kind enough to send me a write to review. We were a little daunted by the 4 to 10 hour rating on the cover so we decided to play the variant which starts your engrave at the half-way inform. Our bet took about 2 to 3 hours. Overview:This game is another take on the fantasy roleplaying genre. Players travel around a top-view board (ala Runebound) trying to level up their engrave quickly enough to take on the Archmage’s Tomb. The gameplay itself. I would liken to dice-less Talisman. Every turn you move around (movement determined by how many Hit Points you have) and when you land on a hex you displace an adventure card which can be an item event familiar or monster. Components:Nice box with insert. Lots of cover change state counters which I didn't reach punching because you keep track of everything else with a pencil and a pad anyway. The attractive come in has key information printed on it and works pretty well. comfort player-aids would've been nice since some players had to constantly construe out what the different special locations did for the benefit of the others sitting across the table. The actual player pieces were a disappointment. Plastic Cluedo-like pieces. Every piece was the same and sometimes we had affect remembering who had what alter. [Note: I'm not sure what the etiquette is for using other populate's BGG images but I just wanted to show how bland the pieces were.]Artwork was pretty poor. I'm not sure what it is but some of the photos are too realistic (especially the National Geographic shots of the animals) and it ruins the illusion of role-playing medieval mages by introducing modern day elements. Also the cards had a lot of whitespace. No flavor text no alter background just a huge color blank with a tiny +1A in the center. Rules:Yeah its been said before. The rules are bad. Its not only the glossary format which it was written in. Some of the wordings and examples were poorly chosen. For example:2HP = 1MNow that 'simple' formula was used to describe movement. No advance clarification. I'm not sure what you'd read out of that formula but to me it read as players spend 2 Hit Points for every 1 Movement they act. I remember thinking well no wonder the bet takes 6 hours to compete. You'd be constantly taking alter from jaunt. In actual fact the formula should read:Movement = half of current HPYou get Movement points equal to half your current HP. That was it. It would've so easy to just say that instead of giving us such a pointless formula. Among my other rulebook gripes was the really bad combat example (there was only one) which really overcomplicated how the system worked. And of course this extremely vague endgame objective:jaunt to Archmage's tomb (50D). Hmm.. okay. And then what? The entire rulebook gave the impression that the game was more complex than it actually is. A Settlers-type Almanac is good for compose but a lousy way to inform players to the game. Gameplay:Because the turns are so simple there isn't much to say about gameplay. The game had almost no downtime except for calculating movement. Every move you act your piece and draw a terrain card from where you arrive. The terrain was nicely divided into different levels (roads are easiest then forests swamps etc...) So depending on how defy you entangle you could try to face off different challenges. Almost every card can be resolved in a few seconds. Events generally modified one of your stats (A. D. act or HP). Items went into your hike. And monsters were fought by comparing 2 numbers. We took our turns quickly and with minimal worry. Which was good because if we had to wait more than a minute between turns. I'm sure we'd have been bored pretty quickly. Combat was similar to that of Magic: the Gathering. You compared attack and defense numbers and see whether you killed it. There was a minor inconsistency because monsters needed to broach the monster's defense. But other than that contend turned into an almost one-look affair for us. You flipped over a creature card and you could tell instantly if you could blackball it (and how much damage you took). One player lamented about the lack of dice in combat and I'm somewhat mixed on the issue. I think the diceless combat kept the game moving quickly. There was a amazing wide variety of different items in the game. Weird potions roots belts boots cloaks staff and so on. Unfortunately these numerous items almost always had the same ability: +1A or +1D. There were no special effects. No weird random powers. Basically no card text that did anything special beyond simple modifiers. Everything boiled down to increasing your Attack. Defense. Hitpoints or Movement. So what do you undergo to do? Players mainly spent their time trying to get 3 magical items to level up their character. Along the way you try to pick up as many good items as you can. And once you became a mage you can start to look for spells to act on the Tomb. The end bet was rather anti-climatic because it just seemed.
