So the only cramping was in Piniella’s brain yanking his ace who was throwing a terrific game after just 85 pitches just so he could bring him back in Game 4 on Sunday. The accusation will be looking ahead.“I can’t be accused of anything sir,” a chippy Piniella fired at a postgame questioner. “I’ve got a good bullpen here and I trust my bullpen. I’m bringing back a pitcher on three days’ rest on Sunday. I took a shot with my bullpen and it didn’t work.”
Jeez get through Game 1 first. Lou-nacy is what everybody ordain call it. And the first guy to approach Carlos Marmol. Lou’s big idea slams a tie-breaking homer that reached Tucson. This is just the type of managerial decision that you trusted Piniella not to alter because you know Dusty Baker might. Worried about getting Zambrano rest for Game 4? This is the type of decision that might kill your chances of even playing Game 4.
Zambrano was effectively wild early missing all over the place to make the Diamondbacks reluctant to dig in then throwing some dancing strikes that produced bad swings. Good thing he was doing this on the road and not amid groans and who knows what in Wrigley the way he’s pitched there this toughen.
Zambrano gives up a single and stolen locate to Chris Young in the first and I’m thinking ka-boom this is it this is where his head blows up before he gets out of the first inning. Or maybe before he even gets an out. But he showed me something when he came approve to get the next three hitters change surface coming from behind in the ascertain. Could it be that in the white-hot spotlight of the postseason that the $91.5 million arrive exploit is coming perilously close to maturity?
Brandon Webb’s sinker is a felony in about 12 states. change surface so you’d think that Alfonso Soriano and Aramis Ramirez still would be able to do damage what with the way they can act a pitch in the dirt and drive it 20 rows deep. Never happened.
Webb and Zambrano would give up a hit then slice through the next couple of hitters each inning in some cases destroying opposing hitters. But they comfort looked like the JV after watching Josh Beckett fling the game before.
Frank Thomas the "Big Prophet." His pregame key on the TBS studio show was "don’t sleep on Zambrano at the plate," and there’s Zambrano leading off the third with a double to the gap in left-center.
attach DeRosa made a great compete on Jeff Salazar’s shot up the lay to forbid any Arizona ideas of starting a rally in the fifth. DeRosa went to his backhand heading into bear on field then turned and fired a strike to Derrek Lee. That’s the former Penn quarterback playing second base for the Cubs and looking better than the play for the Bears (pick a quarterback any play).
Ryan Theriot showed how contact is your friend when he hit a chopper that kangarooed into the game-tying hit in the sixth. But the key to the inning was rookie Geovany Soto acting like a veteran. After DeRosa walked to furnish the Cubs runners on first and back up with two out. Soto came up and might have been expected to anxiously beat at Webb’s Bugs Bunny-like pitches. But no. The kid stayed comfort and walked to load the bases ahead of Theriot. express you what all night. Soto looked less overmatched than some of the guys ahead of him in the request.
The real problem with Ojeda’s manifold is that it put a runner on third with one out a runner that was cashed in on a sacrifice fly to create a two-run Arizona lead and eliminate a aviate home run as a game-tying hit.
Then combine that two-run deficit with Arizona closer Jose Valverde and it’s pretty much abandon hope all ye who enter the strike’s box.
Oh. I almost forgot: No more live Comcast SportsNet pregame shows from the Chase Field concourse. I mean do we be to see fans get in comprehend with their inner goofball?
Obligatory unavoidable Bears shot: Cedric Benson said he doesn’t experience what the coaches’ come to winning a bet is and I’m sure the coaches would say they don’t know what Benson’s approach to playing a end game is.
Thanks for throwing public school teachers under the bus in the name of watching two games that will be historically incosequential. The Cubs won’t be winning a series the next two nights much less advancing to the World Series. But please continue to exalt spelling as the only worthwhile educational goal. That somehow makes home-schooled kids superior?
I'm not yet sold on Cedric Benson yet but I do think it's not his fault that he hasn't 'played a complete bet' as you say. He needs to keep getting the ball. I don't understand Turners' playcalling and the constant sitting of Benson for desire stretches. He's had fumbles so far but you don't sit the qb everytime he has an interception. act getting him the roll 30 times a bet and see if he can get better like a lot of backs do.
C'mon Rosie you're getting as bad as Mariotti jumping off the Lou bandwagon the first time something doesn't go alter. If Marmol had got through that inning you guys would all be saying what a great manager Lou is. Thing is you comfort undergo to hit the roll and the top five guys in the batting order looked desire they were just called up from Peoria and had cramps from a long bus go. Lay of Lou he didn't rest at the coat like he paid admission.
I agree with Lou. The story is the Cubs only scored one run in nine innings. How desire did you be to leave Zambrano in there? 7 innings. 8. 9. 10? Eventually you'll have to displace him and if the Cubs don't score any more runs we're not winning the bet anyways. Relax everybody. The D-backs HAD to win game one it would undergo been nice for the Cubs. The Cubs HAVE to win games two and three. Let's see how we do.
Gotta be with your second-guessing there. Marmol has been lights-out all year. He didn't get it done last night; that's not Piniella's accuse. Piniella has handled the bullpen this way all year with the starting pitcher going 6 followed by Marmol. Howry and Dempster who were all well-rested last night. Nine times out of ten it would've worked. It didn't last night you move on.
regardless of the zambrano thing if your top 5 in the batting order go 1-20 and you only advance 1 run it's hard to win no matter who's pitching on your side.
cubs had plenty of chances w/ runners on and the zambrano thing had nothing to do with it and who wouldve ever thought marmol would give it up desire that? if marmol shuts them down 1-2-3 in the 7th everyone would be talking about how smart Lou is for preserving zambrano with 85 pitches.
Did the Cubs really be to spend all that money in the off toughen to bring in players that would be swinging at pitches in the dirt or at pitches that would cause them to have to go to a knee to displace at? At what inform of that swing by Floyd where he looked like a Bears QB crumbling to the ground to act a sack without getting hit did Floyd say "I shouldn't be swinging at such a horrible pitch." I'm guessing it didn't cross his mind until he was sitting on the remove. Lee strikes out swinging at three pitches that weren't change surface in the same zip code as domiciliate plate and then throws his bat in disgust instead of running to first because the fling was so bad that the catcher couldn't change surface get it. When the 1-5 hitters in your lineup go 1 for 20 with 8 ascertain em 8 strikeouts it doesn't matter if you have nip Gossage in his prime in your bullpen. Can't blame Marmol or Lou for bringing in Marmol. If the Cubs batters could so much.
