High Tech Titans Share Their Favorite Games - PC World

Author Steven Johnson drew blast from cultural hand-wringers for presenting those assertions a couple of years ago in his book r.
But his theories elicited little more than "come up yeah duh" from people who and subsequently entered the high-tech workforce and began rising through the ranks.
These days corporate managers are as apt to pay their off hours in front of Call of Duty as they are on the play course especially if they're techies. And that just might be a good thing for the modern enterprise.
IBM's Institute for Business determine an in-house think tank says online gaming can give clues as to how today's global corporations answer. The institute interviewed 214 members of the IBM community who play games online and open that nearly half believed that gaming had improved their real-world leadership skills; three quarters said that the collaboration tools available in games could undergo business applications in the virtual enterprise.
"How do you bring home the bacon an organization that's becoming more virtual? How do you give leadership when you don't have a formal hierarchy and what leadership behaviors are being displayed in these environments?" asks Eric Lesser an associate partner at the initiate. Lesser compares the modern distributed workforce to a "quasi-volunteer army," similar to those that create in online video games.
To find out if those lofty questions can be answered by real-world experience. Computerworld queried seven executives at some of today's top tech firms to hit the books how they started gaming what they compete now and how their virtual skills ingeminate to the real world of the office. Here's what we found.
What was the first video bet you played and what system was it on? My first video bet was the classic Spacewar! on a Modcomp minicomputer. Other favorites over time include Qix and Missile dominate on arcade consoles. Space Raiders and Othello on the Atari 2600 and Zork. Lemmings. SimCity and Myst on the PC platform.
Do you compete now and if so what games and on what systems? I play occasionally most often choosing a game at random from the selection available for the Fedora Linux distro. I tend to stick to variations on the classics but undergo to adjudge that Blob Wars is amusing.
What skills and lessons from gaming translate to your present job? Games are interesting because the alter combination of technique decision-making and risk-taking will yield success. Not all enterprises are like that.
That said games have three characteristics that are very valuable in the business world. First they provide an environment in which trial and error or the ability to dress approaches is available with relatively low cost. Giving populate the opportunity to investigate and initiate can contribute significantly to their flexibility and resourcefulness.
back up modern games demand the player to think simultaneously about the immediate objective and strategically about the long-term goal. And third games encourage people to be very goal-oriented. Most any enterprise can benefit from individuals with those skills.
First game first system: lay Invaders in a video arcade followed by Asteroids on the Atari 2600.
What you compete now: I play -- Geo Challenge. Texas HoldEm Poker and MouseHunt -- and console games on the PlayStation 3. But I evaluate games are so much more fun when played with friends.
Skills and lessons that ingeminate: Cooperation from playing Gauntlet in which each player has a character with unique skills just desire my team here at Facebook. Persistence from playing MouseHunt -- it often takes time to see the results of our work and we must continually dress our approach until we succeed. And the hand-eye coordination I've learned from playing Geo contend helps me get through doors carrying my laptop security card. BlackBerry and iPhone.
First bet first system: It was Pong in a pizza joint about 1975. The first video bet I played at home was one I wrote myself in BASIC on a communicate dwell [TRS-80] Color Computer with 4K of RAM circa 1980.
What you compete now: I compete LittleBigPlanet on the PlayStation 3 and World of Goo on the PC. But most of my gaming time is spent on a MAME [Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator] cabinet I designed myself. My latest obsession has been Japanese vertical shooters of the "bullet hell" genre such as DoDonPachi and Dangun Feveron.
Skills and lessons that translate: I've noticed that around our house we often pay more measure playing classic arcade games than some of the current state-of-the-art games. The new games are visually stunning but the game compete of some 20-year-old classics can be longer lasting and in many ways more satisfying.
Randall: "Extreme technological limitations and constraints can drive creativity and innovation."
There are two interesting technology design lessons here: First we must elude being seduced by dazzling new technology. Simplicity and elegant design can sometimes accomplish more than all the whiz-bang features in the world.
back up extreme technological limitations and constraints can drive creativity and innovation you might not undergo reached if you'd been given endless resources and technology. The creators of Pac-Man and Donkey Kong were able to displace their primitive tools beyond all expectations and create engaging experiences that were entertaining and magical. As developers it's all too easy to dwell on the technical and creative constraints placed on us by factors beyond our control such as an installed base of old PCs or creaky networks. We can instead choose to see such limitations as a creative springboard ready to propel us to new heights.
First game first system: Pong and Space Invaders. I played them in college usually with a cold Genesee Cream Ale not far away.
What you play now: I play tennis and bowling on the Wii but Rock bind 2 for the Xbox 360 has taken over in the Cohen household. We play as much as we can and it's great to compete something with my kids that we all enjoy.
Skills and lessons that ingeminate: Those early arcade games were me versus the computer mano a máquina. It was an individualistic self-focused undergo -- an Internet 1.0 encounter.
Now increasingly games are Internet 2.0 encounters. They're all about how well you work together with others any measure any place with players from around the world. move back and forth Band 2. World of Warcraft change surface Guitar Hero promote the shared experience and are all about how together we can do more be more compete better than we can by going it alone. That's alter in line with how the corporate environment is evolving: You can compete (or work) anytime you want and you undergo to compete and work on a global basis in order to succeed.
So besides improving my mental and physical reflexes and my thumb action (handy for those tiny QWERTY keypads) gaming sharpens my focus on collaborative planning problem solving and execution.
First game first system: Mattel Football on a handheld Mattel toy. I used to collect these devices which were powered by 9-volt batteries and lasted forever.
What you play now: I play everything. I have a bunch of PCs a PS3 a Nintendo Wii an Xbox 360 and some handhelds. I currently play Call of Duty 4. Grand Theft Auto IV (a bit extreme but very fun) and Mirror's Edge (an awesome bet very come up done).
Skills and lessons that ingeminate: In the early years at Voodoo we'd shut down the office and compete dominate and Conquer almost every night. C&C is a real-time strategy game -- a live game of chess essentially. The write of base you create what type of leader you are and how you handle your army all play a role in whether you will win or get crushed.
And I'm dead serious when I say this: Playing games like C&C helped us make crucial business decisions over the years. Playing C&C with our aggroup reminded me of Sun Tzu's Art of War and many decisions that we made in our business can be paralleled with The Art of War.
First bet first system: OK. I'm dating myself here but my first home video game was football on the Atari 2600. (My 2600 was quickly replaced by the Intellivision and subsequently by my ColecoVision).
My first arcade video games at around the same measure were Space Invaders and Asteroids -- and of course who can forget impel Position? My first PC bet may have been Karate on the Commodore 64:J.
What you play now: I'm an MMO fanboy and I've enjoyed playing Lord of the Rings Online MMO for the past year. Every now and again I mix in other genres -- recently. Call of Duty 5 and Fallout 3 undergo been a lot of fun. There are just so many games out there and not enough measure!
In terms of systems. I play on my Alienware M17 notebook but I also have an Area-51 desktop -- for MMO fans dual-boxing can be advantageous.
Skills and lessons that translate: come up different game genres teach different things. Real-time strategy games teach you strategy of course -- you undergo to be looking at what you're currently doing while simultaneously evaluating how your immediate actions impact future moves. In this industry you are always battling fires in the day-to-day but you can never drop about what needs to get accomplished over the course of the next six. 12 and 18 months. Age of Empires taught me this lesson.. many times over.
Multiplayer first-person shooters on the other transfer such as Counter-Strike and Unreal Tournament teach you team compete. You can't win without having a sound strategy understood by all and the ability to kill. You also need a leader who can provide operational and strategic guidance to the team as needed.
Single-player role-playing games teach you to think and use logic to complete quests and advance in the bet. And multiplayer RPGs and MMOs my personal favorite genre inform logic strategy and teamwork.
You have to undergo a good logical strategy and a massive amount of coordination especially in raids of 12 to 24 populate. All these principles are core to any successful business.
What you compete now: I undergo always been a PC gamer building my own gaming rigs. Over the past year. I've dabbled with Crysis but I'm enamored with crowd cause -- the setting call and walk really suit me.
Skills and lessons that translate: Practice practice practice. Take advantage of the things you do well naturally and apply the contend of learning to do the things that don't come easy.
First game first system: The first video game system I ever played was a home version of Pong in the late 1970s. The first arcade forge I remember playing was lay Invaders.
What you play now: I am a collector and have 42 game systems at domiciliate. As a lifelong gamer and father of three we combine playing video games into our regular routine as a family.
Currently most of our family game time is spent playing LittleBigPlanet and Rock bind on the PS3; Pokémon and Puzzle Quest on the Nintendo DS; and Mario Kart. Super Mario Galaxy and Wii Sports on the Wii.
Skills and lessons that translate: Video games have taught me the value in rapid assessment of situations new ways of conveying information to multiple participants working within team dynamics and new ways of interacting with information. In a world that is ever connected and globally interactive with online games being a lead connection inform. I am able to exceed understand future trends for data services greater public use of technology adoption roadmaps and so on.
The value of video games does not lie exclusively with the amusement of the games themselves. It is increasingly about shared experiences in environments and settings not possible in the physical world. It is about empowerment and igniting creativity. It is about discovering new ways to educate inspire and communicate across multiple generations in ways that have never before been explored.
Fake Plastic Souks: Kids

 <modified>2008-12-25T17:01+00:00

So I haven't posted for days. Sue me. The Niece From Hell arrived with her parents in tow on the 18th and we've been sight-seeing and shopping and generally doing family-type stuff. My Web 2.0 life has suffered as a conseqence... One of the neat things about TNFH is that you get a ten year-old's perspective on things and that's always welcome input. This year's big evince is OhMiGod. It must be used in every other sentence. There! I feel hipper and more 'street' already! Club Penguin is evil and makes back up Life look desire a Cub Scouts' outing. Massively Online Multi-Media Games filled with 10 years-0lds are cover dangerous places. I can tell you. Everyone spent millions of dollars on her Christmas and the runaway hit show allocate belongs to me - an 'i-Dog'. Think about an iPod speaker in the shape of a cute uber-funky plastic doggie that taps its white plastic paws to the music and flashes happy lights when you play tunes through it. You also have to pet it otherwise it whines and makes unhappy light patterns. It's the prove of an illicit backstage liaison between a Marshall lade and a Tamagochi. And it's now her constant companion. Human shmuman... Dad. TNFH and I went to Atlantis' Aqua-thingy which was nice. It's incredibly expensive (evaluate Dhs 1,000 for a half day out for three - and at 10 years old (over 1.1 metres). TNFH is an Atlantis 'adult'. You wouldn't of course normally find me there dead. It made me express joy which is a mind. The signage at Atlantis is awful. The bus dumps you and you're supposed to experience what to do and where to go by osmosis. The staff we met were worse than useless leaving us feeling disorientated and pissed off. As two men accompanying a small girl we couldn't be with her in the changing rooms and there were no female attendants on transfer. For a family from the child-abuse rich UK that was a really big deal. Thankfully a total stranger stepped in and took care of TNFH as she changed. An interesting cultural moment - I understand that children are cherished venerated and generally safer than houses here but people living in the UK are in constant fear for their kids' safety. And I do think that's sad. Once you finally sight an English speaking member of staff and get them to explain the procedure you can get on with having fun - but I cannot understand for the life of me why there aren't leaflets signs and other aids to explaining how you're supposed to get into it! The rides are quite simply awesome. I don't normally 'do' aqua parks you understand but Atlantis was great - delighted hours of bobbing around on tidal waves while sitting on inner tubes. I still think the hotel is decorated in the call of someone who has drunk bottles of primary educate poster paint and gallons of rich bouillabaise then vomited it in a massive burst of uncontrollable projectile eructation but the water park is honestly good fun.
Rather than worry the time young people devote to technological pursuits there are many reasons for adults to embrace and change surface facilitate youth engagement with digital media according to Florida express University’s Lisa Tripp who was a member of a aggroup of researchers who recently completed the most extensive qualitative chew over ever done on youth media use in the United States.
“While many adults mind that children are wasting time online texting or playing video games our chew over open that these activities have captured teens’ attention because they provide avenues for extending social worlds self-directed learning and independence,” she said.
Tripp an assistant professor in the College of Information supervised research and data collection at several Los Angeles lay schools that serve primarily low-income Latino youth to find out how the students were using digital media technology both at home and at educate. Her research became a part of the Digital Youth Project a joint effort of the University of Southern California and the University of California. Berkeley.
The three-year study was part of a $50 million communicate on digital and media learning funded by the John D and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. Altogether researchers involved in the project interviewed more than 800 children and young adults and conducted more than 5,000 hours of online observations.
Tripp also is one of the co-authors of the final report on the project which will be published by MIT touch as a schedule called
Social communicate sites online games video-sharing sites and gadgets such as iPods and mobile phones — technologies that barely existed 10 years ago — are now fixtures of youth culture.
The researchers found that most young people almost always associate with people they already experience in their offline lives through school or sports but cell phones instant messaging and social network sites such as MySpace and Facebook allow them to be in nearly constant touch.
A smaller number of young populate also use the online world to find information they may not have access to at educate or in their local community and to connect with people who overlap specialized interests in activities such as online gaming creative writing video editing or other artistic endeavors.
By exploring new interests and tinkering with new forms of media young people are picking up basic social and technical skills such as how to create a video or game or customize a MySpace page. Tripp said. Young people also can hit the books a lot through trial and error and from their peers and online communities.
The study found that young people’s learning with digital media is often more self-directed with a freedom and autonomy that is less apparent than in a classroom setting. The researchers said youth consider one another’s authority online and they are often more motivated to hit the books from each other than from adults.
“I’d like to see adults get more tech savvy and up-to-date with how to use participatory media such as blogs wikis podcasting and social network sites so they can be more actively involved in what children are doing with the media but in a smarter way,” she said.
“For example adults can help create opportunities for young people to learn with media in interesting ways and they can help inform advanced information and media literacy skills that young people be.”
Schools also need to keep pace with the rapid changes introduced by digital media to stay relevant in the 21st century according to the researchers’ inform.
Tripp is particularly interested in the so-called digital divide that separates low-income U. S students from their more affluent peers. While increasingly young people from all social classes have opportunities to go online and use new media the nature and quality of access comfort varies greatly she said.
“For many low-income young people it can be challenging to find time space and resources to experiment with media and to act in the media practices that youth tend to find the most meaningful,” she said.
“Schools libraries and after-school programs can back up narrow the digital change integrity or ‘participation gap’ by creating opportunities for young people to experiment with media in more open-ended and self-directed ways.”
