"Dear Nintendo: Mario deserves a bigger push" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-15 11:11:36

Super Mario Galaxy has finally arrived to near-universal acclaim. EGM's Shane Bettenhausen calls it the game of the decade and others have hailed it as the best platformer ever made. My copy arrives from Amazon tomorrow and I can't recall feeling this excited for a new Mario game in years. I saw a Wii-owner friend of mine the other day whom I would describe as a casual but devoted gamer. I asked him if he planned to play Galaxy and he replied. "There's a new Mario game?" Where is the marketing push for this game? In Japan mass transit trains are running Galaxy ads on LCD screens and there are nine separate Galaxy commercials running on Japanese television. Perhaps I don't watch enough television but I have yet to see a Galaxy commercial in English aside from the one posted on YouTube. What I have seen on television are several clever Brain Age ads running on various networks. Even Nintendo's own web site lacks any meaningful promotion of the game. A visit to the home page reveals a flash animation ad for Galaxy that is replaced ten seconds later with an ad for the new Phoenix Wright game. No other information about the game appears anywhere on the page. Clicking on the Wii link takes you to a page that continues to announce that "Metroid Prime 3 is available now." Worse yet the official website for the game () isn't even ready yet. The page loads with the message "Official site coming soon!" The game is out I don't ordinarily concern myself with game company marketing budgets or strategies but I'm unusually concerned about Nintendo's lack of push for Galaxy and I'm trying to figure out where that's coming from. I'm sure there's a nostalgia factor at play. I actually care about the Mario franchise. I see it as a pivotal series that helped create an industry. I also see it as a franchise that has innovated gameplay more consistently than any other and this new title is apparently a stellar example of Nintendo's genius for design and polish. Perhaps Mario games sell themselves and perhaps Nintendo knows exactly what they're doing. The soaring stock price would suggest they need no help from me bringing consumers to their products. Fair enough. I want Nintendo to succeed for admittedly sentimental reasons but I have no personal stake in the corporation. I do however have a legitimate personal stake in the Mario franchise. It means something to me and to lots of other devoted gamers as well. Placing the design for Galaxy back in the hands of the famed EAD Tokyo team indicates that Nintendo is serious about maintaining the franchise's high level of excellence. Failing to promote it vigorously makes no sense to me and raises questions about Nintendo's real commitment to the game. Hi mdb. You're right of course about the Wii being targeted at a casual crowd but a new Mario flagship game (not Mario Tennis or Paper Mario) brings with it a sizable hardcore audience as well. Maybe this group will buy the game anyway with no advertising but I think building buzz for a new game is something worth doing if the game is to be seen as something truly special. I also think the Wii has a perception problem among the 14-30 crowd. It's perceived as a "kids and family" console (which it is) with no hardcore games (which it isn't). Young gamers who aren't on the Mario bandwagon will miss this game because Nintendo hasn't convinced them it's worth their time. However if the Wii is playing to its strength of a community type console are they perhaps expecting word of mouth to spread the news of this game? Admittedly. I don't watch television (well. I've recently started watching a series with a friend but that's another story) and rarely use mass transit so my level of advertisements comes from web pages I happen to frequent. All of the things I hear about games I hear from other gamers. I think the real change here is in Nintendo's overall marketing approach. Those of us who have reached a certain age can attest to the fact that Nintendo used to be significantly more aggressive promoting their flagship titles like Mario and Zelda even after they had become popular. Since the arrival of the Wii they have clearly shifted their advertising focus to the casual market. This is purely anecdotal of course but my wife and I just finished watching "Dancing with the Stars" (guilty pleasure!) and saw two Nintendo commercials: one highlighted senior citizens playing Wii Bowling; the other featured--no surprise--the Dancing with the Stars video game. I'm not bent out of shape over Nintendo's focus on casuals. I'm delighted to see all these new gamers entering the market. My concern is that their diminished promotion for Galaxy may signal a shift away from their overall commitment to the series. The game itself suggests I have nothing whatsoever to fear. But the quiet release suggests otherwise. I have yet to buy a Wii (I go in and out of gaming and right now I'm shying away from console games) so I have no idea of the line up at all. Is it perhaps possible that they are being quiet now so as to exploit this come the holiday season? It's not too far off and if they have no other big releases planned (seeing as Smash Brothers was delayed yet again and wouldn't have made the holiday rush) it seems they may well just be hoping to start advertising then. By the way if you do decide to get a Wii there are some wonderful games out there aside from Mario. Metroid 3 is terrific and I'm having a real blast with Zack and Wiki. I think it is pretty safe to say that Mario does seel itself. He's one of the most recognised fictional characters after all. So all it needs to sell to Wii owners is just be visibly present on the shop shelves. Looking at TV ads here it does seem that Nintendo aims to advertise games that people can go out and buy now rather then advertising the release date. Which might be a much more effective strategy for that sort of media products to the non-hardcore gaming or even enthousiast gaming audience. These aren't thesort of people who keep track of release dates for but a very rare few things. I think a big part of what you're seeing is that Nintendo of Amerca has just lost a number of major players in their marketing division due to the recent move. A loss of that many major personnel reverberates for a few months in every direction---work slows down or gets chaotic as they're getting ready to leave nothing's happening while they're gone and it'll take the new people a while to get up to speed. It's a shame it's happening to NOA during the holiday season; fortunately the Wii is going strong enough that it'll still be on top.

In April of 2006 the had one of its most anticipated drafts on display. The three players from the Heisman Trophy Ceremony were all fresh off competing in the same memorable BCS Championship game and they were all going to be in the 2006 Draft. The player who won the Heisman Trophy. Reggie Bush was the front-runner to be the 1 pick of the draft. That was until the night before the draft. That night the Houston Texans who owned the first pick of the draft announced that they had reached an agreement with Defensive End Mario Williams and that Williams would be their first pick. That decision had a shocking effect throughout the unify. Everyone had just assumed that Reggie Bush was the consensus overall pick and that he would surely be the first pick of the draft. Teams went into a frenzy trying to make a trade with the team that owned the #2 pick in order to get Reggie Bush. But that team the Saints held their ground and selected Bush for themselves. Forever. Bush and Williams would now be connected to one of the most surprising and controversial moves in Draft history. In the two players' first against each other the Houston Texans prevailed over the Saints 23-10. The was deemed as the first in determining if the Texans made the right pick by passing on the Heisman Trophy winner for the defensive end. And at least for this game. Mario Williams came out as the exceed pick. Reggie Bush only rushed fro 34 yards on 15 carries giving him a 2.3 yards/carry average. He did put in 12 catches for 70 yards but he only 5.8 yards/reception which is around what Adrian Peterson averages per rush. Bush had no scores and coughed up the ball two times. Mario Williams on the other transfer he had six total tackles and converged on Saints QB Drew Brees for a sack at a pivotal point in the game. He also forced a fumble and continued to put constant pressure on the Saints quarterback all game. ________________________________________________________NORTH COUNTY SPORTS: The Magazine - E-Magazine Monthly - Online Daily858-720-2188 * NCSports@PositivePlaceSD org * PositivePlaceSD orgA Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito Publication

"Video Game Review" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-01 22:32:03

By Ethan SmallGame: Super Mario GalaxyPlatform: Nintendo WiiESRB Rating: E for EveryonePrice: $49.99 What an incredible year for video games; there undergo been numerous outstanding games released across all of the current generation systems. It appears as though Nintendo with legendary game creator Shigeru Miyamoto has created a Mario masterpiece to top the enumerate. It's called "Super Mario Galaxy" and there's no challenge that this unprecedented 3-D platformer is just as excellent as its critically acclaimed Nintendo 64 predecessor. "Super Mario 64". Once again the drop Italian plumber. Mario is on a mission to bring through Princess Peach from the iniquitous Koopa king. Bowser. This time. Mario must travel far beyond the Mushroom Kingdom. This isn't just a quick plane ride to Isle Delfino (like in "Super Mario Sunshine"). It's a trip to a vast and endless space…outer-space that is. After a brief story book introduction our beloved hero receives an invitation from Princess break to join her at the castle. Mario arrives only to sight the Princess' go being ripped from the earth by an enormous UFO along with Bowser's hurry of airships. Mario leaps after the castle (with the Princess still inside) that is heading rapidly towards outer-space. After being flung from the airborne castle. Mario finds himself on a small planet with an interesting star-shaped creature. These cute little guys known as Luma are scattered about the "Mario Galaxy" universe so be prepared to see them just about everywhere you go. This particular Luma guides Mario to its "mother" the mystical Rosalina who looks an awful lot desire Peach. At their home the Comet Observatory. Rosalina tells Mario that Bowser is responsible for stealing the power stars which are needed for the Lumas to live and to power the observatory. Mario must enter the domes on the Comet Observatory to travel to the huge number of galaxies to re-obtain the stolen power stars and eventually liberate break from Bowser's clutches. Each galaxy in the "Mario Galaxy' universe has its own unique characteristics. Some are wide open worlds and others consist of small planets. Underneath the outer-space motif of each aim there are themes from deserts to bee hives and haunted mansions to sun-drenched islands. Every last one of these galaxies and planets are crafted magnificently causing the player to wander about and explore every nook and cranny. "Mario Galaxy" is an absolutely mind-blowing mix of old and new. The game jam-packed with.
