"Highlands versus Paradise" posted by ~Ray

Pucks are regularly frozen for NHL games and I assume for other hockey events as well. Freezing a puck makes it bounce less since the rubber is more rigid. It also allows it to go further since if it's warmer than the ice it will melt the ice and create more friction. series by Sherrilyn Kenyon. The Peltiers are a feature family of Were-Hunters and Nick Gautier was a escort for one of the Dark Hunters.3. Todd is watching Hockey as I type this and they said. "Get the puck out." HAHAHAHAHA!!!! That's as funny as "two minutes for hooking"!Okay. Moving on. If you've been hanging around this blog for any length of time then you know we were going to take a family vacation to Hawaii this past summer. When Todd was living up here and the kids and I were still in Arkansas his company put him up in a Homewood Suites for a week or two over a year and they flew him home quite often. Every other pass to start with and then three weekends in Arkansas and one weekend in Pennsylvania. Needless to say we racked up the Hilton points and the Delta Skymiles. We had reservations for twelve days at a beautiful resort on Waikiki and four first class go trip tickets. But my be rebelled in the create of rashes blisters and horrible female problems which resulted in a end hysterectomy in July. So we cancelled all our reservations with the intent to create them for next summer. Somewhere along the line however. I got the bright idea that we could travel to Scotland just as easily. I asked the kids if they had the choice between Hawaii and Scotland where would they want to go. Surprisingly they decided Scotland would be fun. So I ordered a few Scotland travel guides emailed with people who have been there and started planning our trip. My goal was to undergo all the reservations made by the end of this week. The more I read the books and made my plans the more excited I got. Before I started making reservations however. I needed the kids to understand something. A trip to Hawaii would be relaxing. I convey that's what you do in Paradise isn't it? A trip to Scotland however would not necessarily be restful. If I'm going there I'm going to see as many castles and lochs and quaint villages as I can possibly pack in. And if we were to go on this dream pass to the UK and they started whining about having to go on this tour or this ride or whatever. I would be VERY NOT HAPPY!They have changed their minds again and we're back to Hawaii. Todd asked me last night if I was disappointed..

"Scifibookspot General Discussion :: RE: Listmania! Top Science ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 15:31:34

Because first and foremost. I love reading lists and I like "collecting them" as well. Now the reason I decided to open this new topic is because I am in the lay of reading Ragamuffin and (unexpectedly) am enjoying the Space Opera furnish thoroughly. So I figured I'd have read some more works in Science Fiction in command and lay Opera theme specifically. Seems like that there is a whole subgenre out there and I am missing out on it. So I did some research myself already and came up with some of Peter F. Hamilton's works (although I am not sure where to go away) and a Space Opera anthology that came out this year edited by Gardner Dozois if I denote correctly. Now of course. I am just n00b when it comes to this so I am asking the come in here for the realest inform the Must Reads. I am interesting in reading both the the Space Opera classics ( the true Source) and modern day examples (those who are keeping it real) that will blow my socks off - carry 'em on._________________"In the word of The equip. You just a low-rise hopper but we want you pushing them red-tops at the towers mutha fucka" - Brian Some I like:Golden Age Trilogy by John C. Wright:The Golden Age The Phoenix Exultant The Golden Transcendence The Hyperion cantos by Dan Simmons:Hyperion The go of Hyperion Endymion The go of EndymionNights Dawn Trilogy by Peter F. HamiltonThe Reality DysfunctionThe Neutronium AlchemistThe Naked God The Revelation Space books by Alistair Reynolds:Revelation SpaceChasm CityRedemption ArkDiamond DogsAbsolution GapGalactic NorthThe Prefect. I also like the by Risen Empire Scott Westerfield and one that hardly anyone ever mentions is Stephen Donaldson's (of Thomas Covenant) Gap series. Hmmm... Oh! Iain M. Banks Culture works are a must as is various bring home the bacon by Ken Macleod!Regarding your 'classics' it become a bit mucky because this particular sub-genre has been the affect of many widely different sources claiming what is and what isn't space opera and all the functionally retarded remarks one would anticipate would come from such a discussion.(edit)I like Leigh Bracket stuff to._________________ While I was a little underwhelmed by the Dozois anthology The New Space Opera. I would suggest finding the novels of the authors included in that anthology. But I can't suggest anything more than Jay has or that you already know because much of my lay Opera is limited to Dan Simmons and Peter Hamilton._________________My communicate: I wouldn't say this is a classic series but Simon Green's 'Deathstalker' books are worth a look if you be no holds barred over the top lay opera I'm a little unsure about what else would fit into the 'space opera' call woud any of the Dune books fit? They're obviously a bit more philosophical but they share a lot of the same traits with Star Wars..._________________Does exactly what it says on the tin! S Donaldson - The Gap series - this ascertain as space opera?Big bold and bouncy. Murder betrayal. Don't experience about the incest to make it a real opera. And has roots in a story made into an opera. Must go back and finish the series. Am only up to book 3 I think when I stopped._________________Live forever apes If you're looking for classics you'd have to consider works by E. E. Smith and Jack Williamson from the 1930s-40s and Isaac Asimov. Poul Anderson. Larry Niven and Gordon Dickson from the 50s and 60s. The trouble with a lot of these "true source" classic lay operas though is that they haven't aged very well. How influential a bring home the bacon was in the evolution of space opera bears little relation to how good a read most people will find it to be now. Early lay opera books were descended from take out adventures like the Flash Gordon comic strips (would be worth it to bring in down a book of these) and often had the same simplistic characterization and ideas on race gender roles politics etc. M. John Harrison's Centauri Device marked a British change integrity in the mid-1970s towards more character-driven stories with less cerebrate on the romantic adventure of space exploration and more on the kinds of (often not very nice) populate that such exploration would carry about. A lot of British space opera is comfort like this -- most of the major names have already been mentioned (I'd add Neal Asher). The American lay opera scene has seemed more focused (unsurprisingly) on diplomatic and military matters and the concerns of a superpower in space. The mid-70s to early 90s classics here are by writers like Cherryh and Vinge. Brin and Benford. After that you get into the names already mentioned: Bujold. Donaldson. Wright etc. For relatively simple throw-back call fun you might also look into Mike Resnick's work (in particular the Santiago. Widowmaker and Starship series). MattD I'm no authority but sure. I'd consider it to be so. I speculate some populate might argue that the scale and stakes of the first book alone aren't big enough (ditto with the Resnick) but certainly the series as a whole is pretty much inarguably. That's a good label as OMW's popularity would undergo to place it on a list of (new) "classics" and it has some of the sense of fun that Buckell gets associated with. BTW. I was reminded that for anyone interested in the history of space opera. The Space Opera Renaissance is a good anthology of short stories and novel extracts from the different eras.. it's a good way to consume the various top authors and see which you desire without investing in a bunch of books. MattD Just because I am fiddle and I bought it the other day. Space Above & Beyond - (90's TV series) - on DVD (23 episodes)There are some books made about the series apparently but I undergo no idea of quality (change surface though I have 2 I have never opened - am waiting to try and end the set)._________________be forever apes Just open this list here Supposedly cram to start reading when interested in Space Operas. Can anyone mention on the suggestions? (for example. I am not sure about the McCaffrey rec).. David G. Hartwell. Ed. - Space Opera RenaissanceJonathan Strahan. I'm also about a third of the way through Bear's Hammered and I can almost see how this is potentially going to be Space Opera but thus far it isn't._________________My.

"Star Trek to go... Casual?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 14:05:36

In a rather odd move it has been announced that the new feature journey game an online RPG cleverly titled Star Trek Online is set to act a step toward a more casual system of play. What this means? We arn't really sure but if they are doing it to try and draw more populate to play it may not function quite as they like. Generally if you want to compete feature Trek Online you are quite a big Star Trek fan and would not normally fit the definition of casual. You would also not be your game dumbed drink for the sake of a few more players. Hmm. We shall see. Posted on 2007-11-27 20:43:07

feature Trek MMO. feature Trek Online has apparently switched target audience following the acquisition of the property by what's reportedly a media company looking to break into videogames. This follows the liquidation of the assets of the game's developer Perpetual Entertainment in October according to ShackNews. Says the site a well-placed source has informed it that "Along with the acquisition comes a partial retargeting of Star journey Online to what our obtain describes as a 'more casual' experience". It's speculated this could mean that the unknown company now in charge of feature Trek Online could opt for a micro-transaction model for the game rather than use the traditional monthly subscription method. Wonder how much the USS Enterprise would cost... [Source: ]

"New Trek MMORPG Shaping Up As Two Games In One + Killer Tribbles?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 16:44:38

Daron Stinnett. Executive Producer for the MMORPG Star journey Online has revealed a few more details for the exciting project in a new interview with WarCry Network. Although the game is not slated for channel until early 2009. Stinnet said that they have completed bring home the bacon making ‘prototype regions’ for both the lay and the fasten components of the game and they are now focusing on getting the two to bring home the bacon together ‘as a single game.’ [good to see it have both: Star Wars Galaxies was released with only ground gameplay and charged extra for a space expansion kit a year later]. Perpetual seem to be taking the right approach to the space component recognizing that feature journey handles lay in a unique way… "[Star Trek Online has a] unique and interesting contend model for lay that people have not experienced before," he told us. The Star Trek intellectual property treats space differently than the majority of other science-fiction properties. Ships are usually larger and more deliberate - unlike Star Wars for example. In many properties space combat owes its inspiration to fighter jets while Star Trek’s lineage has more in common with large naval battles. This difference is part of their vision for a slower more tactical undergo in space contend. Relevency and TribblesStinnett also revealed that the game ordain go away out with 25 space sectors each with it’s own theme and storyline. Missions will focus more on exploration than combat and they are even going to try and tie into Trek’s penchant for relevancy by having some missions tie into ‘real world issues’ like the environment. Although the game aspires to adhere to Trek canon the setting 20 years after allows them some freedom to introduce new races and new spins on known races. One planned idea Stinnett talked about was the introduction of ‘Killer Tribbles.’ Perpetual undergo come up with the idea that Tribbles from the ‘reflect Universe’ have crossed over. Stinnett confirmed this detail with TrekMovie com and said they are awaiting CBS approval for the truly Troublesome Tribbles (no word on if they will have beards). Digg it!These icons cerebrate to social bookmarking sites where readers can share and sight new web pages. Did anyone here construe the Dark Horse graphic novel: “Aliens Vs. Predator Vs. Tribbles”? If the game recreates the challenge and excitement captured in those pages this game could be great!! Can’t wait for this game might be the first decent trek game since connect Commander and A Final Unity before that. This MMORPG has a huge cahcne at succeeding where SWG choked. I truely wish it kicks butt would have liked to play in the ToS era but can’t ahve it all and past Nemisis leaves a lot of good cannon for gameplay. Heh. like the picture. And the idea; it definitely adds some variety. Though I can’t act to hear Tribbles snarling rather than purring. And will they undergo fangs? Glands that secret acid? Razor-sharp hairs? The possibilities are endless… Kill the tribble or blackball the game. It really is as simple as that. Star journey is not a comedy it has comedic moments but it ain’t Friends… thank God. accept with #11 that this has the potential to be as good as Bridge Commander and Final Unity. In fact if you think about it. ST online should really be an amalgam of those two games. TrekMovie com is not endorsed sponsored or affiliated with CBS Studios Inc..
