The Good: Lots of unique units beget varied strategies in-game chat makes it easy to find opponents numerous game modes multi-platformThe Not So Good: Unit icons need to indicate owner more clearly no tutorial bland graphicsWhat say you? A flexible multiplayer tactical strategy game that thrives on unit variety: 6/8MY POORLY WRITTEN INTRODUCTIONWith an increased use of digital media some PC games have left brick-and-mortar shelves in favor of exclusive online distribution. There are a lot of great games out there that you simply won’t find in stores. These can range from small browser-only casual games to more sophisticated strategy titles role-playing games and first person shooters. Zatikon (what do you mean that’s misspelled red underline?) is a tactical strategy game from low-voltage-but-high-fun developer/publisher Chronic Logic the company responsible for a bunch of bridge building games plus and. You know that I am always up for a good strategy game so let’s see what the strangely-named Zatikon has to offer. GRAPHICS AND SOUNDUnfortunately for Zatikon we have to talk about the graphics. Zatikon is a Java-based application and partly because of that is has uninspired 2-D graphics. The entire game plays out on a chess board rather than semi-realistic terrain that could still use a chess board layout. The units are small and sometimes it’s really difficult to tell who is on which team as the warring factions are only differentiated with subtle hints of red and blue. A partial shading of the icon’s background would help immensely: look and tell me which team the horse in the bottom left is on. Heck if I know. The sound fares better if only for the pleasing music that I do enjoy. While I do not mind low-rent graphics when they hinder the gameplay. I do have a problem. ET AL. In Zatikon you attempt to capture the enemy base by moving one of your units into it. While this game is designed to be an online multiplayer experience there are several ways of playing Zatikon. If there is nobody to play against you can take on the computer in single player action. The AI opponent has unlimited units and starts out trivially easy but the frequency of unit spawns and level of aggression increases with each successive game. It’s pretty easy to find other opponents since Zatikon comes with an in-game chat feature and selecting a game type will search for others who are also searching for others (huh?). The “standard” mode of play is a constructed match where two pre-designed armies will clash for battlefield superiority. You can also assign a random army to each side by playing a random match; while this does let you practice with a wide variety of units it may result in an unbalanced game. Cooperative matches let you and a friend take on the computer involving something called “team work.” Your army can consist of 1000 points (you can have up to ten armies saved at a time) and each of the units in the game are assigned a point value based on how good they are. This prevents an experienced player from fielding a superior army simply because they have unlocked those units. You can’t field just any units however: first they must be unlocked by spending gold you earn by winning matches. The units that are unlocked are picked at random so there is an element of chance introduced there. Zatikon lacks an in-game tutorial but the game isn’t very complicated for anyone accustomed to strategy games and the does a good enough job. One advantage of Zatikon’s Java roots is that the game will run on any “real” operating system: Linux. Macintosh and even that niche product. Windows. Zatikon has a lot of units: archers black mages clergy commanders horsemen nature scouts shapeshifters siege soldiers structures white mages and wyrms. And that’s just the classes as there are typically four to six types in each class. There aren’t just cosmetic changes within and across the classes either: it’s more than just more powerful attacks and health. Most of the non-conventional units have a special ability or three that make them special such as sprouting serpents or switching places with an enemy unit. There are too many to mention mainly because I forget a lot of them and the online list isn’t up yet. I will say that the special abilities are pretty well balanced as there aren’t many “must have” units that I have come across yet that don’t have a possible counter. Each unit does have more standard attributes: life (health) power (attack) armor (armor) deploy cost and actions per turn. Zatikon is turn-based and you start out with five commands (moves) per turn but this can be increased by moving tacticians (or a similar unit) onto the battlefield. Thankfully each person is limited to a 90-second turn cutting down on the game time which is already pretty short (a typical game takes 10-15 minutes I would say). The large variety of units makes for some really innovative and truly unique strategies and it’s quite satisfying to watch a plan develop successfully during your turn. The special abilities and unit attributes make for a wide range of viable tactics and no two games will play out the same. There is no “build order” or preferred army composition and this amount of flexibility makes Zatikon far more sophisticated than a lot of big-budget real time strategy games. Zatikon reminds me a lot of : a simple game graphically that has an intriguing strategic underbelly thanks to a diverse selection of units (although Zatikon is a couple of notches below that stellar title overall). IN CLOSINGZatikon is a fun little strategy game. The highlight of the product is the variety of units and their subsequent variety of abilities and attributes and assuming you can look past the pedestrian graphics then a quality strategy title is contained herein. The diverse selection of units is beyond the typical model change and stat alterations: there are some really unique units to deploy and a range of strategies to play with. Add in a handful of different game modes a straightforward method of joining games and multiple operating system support and we have a strategy title with above-average longevity. While it would be nice for the game to come with cutting-edge graphics it’s not necessary although differentiating between each side’s units should be easier. I think that if the game came with high production values from a large publisher. Zatikon would be a hit and get a ton of press. Still. Zatikon is easy to learn and should prove to be a good game for those looking to get their feet wet in the turn-based multiplayer tactical strategy genre.

"Prepare your War Plans for Online Battle in ?Reign of Swords?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-09-28 02:45:15

Good strategy games have been few and far between the most notable being Galcon but if Galcon’s fast paced gameplay wasn’t appealing you may be interested in Reign of Swords by Punch Entertainment. Released just yesterday. Reign of Swords is the first in-depth turn based strategy game for the iPhone. The graphics are extremely simplistic but don’t let this fool you this is the most comprehensive strategy game on the iPhone to date. There is a large selection of units to choose from and each unit is distinct by either attributes and/or skills. For example besides a unit’s normal attack some units have special moves such as Calvary which can easily charge through foot soldiers. But with all great attacks there should be a counter and in fact there is. If you create a line formation of pikemen shoulder-to-shoulder you get an added bonus damage if Calvary charge into your pikemen. The game also has online play accessible once you’ve finished the tutorials. I haven’t had much time with the online play myself so I can’t really comment on how it works or how well it plays. Just a warning this game is definitely not for people that want a short and quick strategy game if you want that go with. govern of Swords is for strategy game fans that enjoy long drawn out battles with a wide variety of tactical options available to them. Reign of Swords () is currently on sale for $7.99 once the sale ends the price will be $9.99.

"THQ continues Dawn Of War expansion with Soulstorm" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-15 23:45:03

THQ has once again returned to Games Workshop's come up for a consume announcing yet another expansion for the company's popular real-time strategy franchise. The series which launched in 2004 for the PC and already includes expansions is based on the popular tabletop miniatures war game though thankfully the electronic version is far less expensive. In development at Relic, is expected to launch in spring 2008. In addition like without having to choose up the other games in the series to do so. Previous expansions added new armies desire the Imperial follow. Tau and Necron and looks to continue this tradition by introducing two new factions bringing the series' total to nine playable races. While THQ remains tight lipped on one of these new races the other will be the Dark Eldar. The game will also add new units across the seven other races including air units a first for the series. Finally the scale of the game is swelling as well with THQ noting that players will do battle across an entire feature system. Yep gotta be Tyranids those would be so awesome (giant customizable bugs lumbering over the battlefield with swarms underfoot would be amazing). Well it has to be tyranids lol it's the only race they have left... Unless of cover they are going to act something new. I suppose they could also draw upon discontinued aspect of the game like the Eldar Harlequins. I doubt they'd choose anything besides tyranids though. Why are alot of you guys thinking tyranids are the only go left? There is still 4 others than tyranids. Sistors of contend. becharm hunters. Daemon hunters and alien hunters. Though i must adjudge tyranids are my favourite team in the whole of Warhammer 40,000 so i hopes it's them but judging by the photos it looks more desire sistors of battle than any other go. they said that tyranids wont be able to be handled by th engine they might do th inquisition i hope they give the air units alot of cater Tyranids are the only ones left. Other than that the only other race I can think of is Sisters of Battle and they're just a cruddier version of the Space Marines. I actually think it's going to be Sisters of Battle/Inquisition. I know a lot of populate would like to undergo 'Nids (myself included) but given that the expansion is called "Soulstorm" and not something like "The Great Devourer". I'm going with the Battle Nuns instead of the Bugs. This is a very good point - Dark Crusade was a great name - the Necrons are dark and like to crusade and the Imperium ran a crusade on the Tau so it works. Soulstorm - Dark Eldar desire souls and the reaving thereof and so does the Inquisition. Then again. Tyranids act things like no other. I'd like tyranids but I agree Inquisition/Sister of Battle is more likely. It's Dark Eldar. The other go is rumoured to be Sisters of Battle. Apparently they can't do the Tyranids with the current engine on DOW they'd need to make DOW 2 to consider Nids. Goes without saying. Tyranids would kick! Although there hasn't been much focus on the shadowy dealings of the Emperor's Inquisition apart from the Grey-Knights. I wish it's Tyranids. However perhaps they'll do things a little different and introduce more than two new races?Only Tzeentch truly knows.... i think they shouldnt do nids because they change magnitude engine and everyone who has only a old com would have to buy a new com it mght be the inquisition Um. Blizzard can pike off. If you're going to talk about such similarities then GW would have more of a right to be cross about it seeing as how their creation came first. blizard cant complain they had SM in warcraft 3 as special units o and theres no point in putin anythin but tyranids as the others are just gonna be alterations of SM and Chaos and that would just suck

"THQ continues Dawn Of War expansion with Soulstorm" posted by ~Ray

THQ has once again returned to Games Workshop's well for a drink announcing yet another expansion for the company's popular real-time strategy certify. The series which launched in 2004 for the PC and already includes expansions is based on the popular tabletop miniatures war game though thankfully the electronic version is far less expensive. In development at Relic, is expected to launch in move 2008. In addition desire without having to pick up the other games in the series to do so. Previous expansions added new armies desire the Imperial Guard. Tau and Necron and looks to continue this tradition by introducing two new factions bringing the series' be to nine playable races. While THQ remains tight lipped on one of these new races the other will be the Dark Eldar. The game will also add new units across the seven other races including air units a first for the series. Finally the scale of the game is swelling as well with THQ noting that players will do contend across an entire star system. Yep gotta be Tyranids those would be so awesome (giant customizable bugs lumbering over the battlefield with swarms underfoot would look amazing). come up it has to be tyranids lol it's the only race they have left... Unless of course they are going to create something new. I suppose they could also draw upon discontinued aspect of the game desire the Eldar Harlequins. I doubt they'd choose anything besides tyranids though. Why are alot of you guys thinking tyranids are the only race left? There is still 4 others than tyranids. Sistors of Battle. Witch hunters. Daemon hunters and alien hunters. Though i must admit tyranids are my favourite aggroup in the whole of Warhammer 40,000 so i hopes it's them but judging by the photos it looks more like sistors of battle than any other race. they said that tyranids wont be able to be handled by th engine they might do th inquisition i hope they give the air units alot of cater Tyranids are the only ones left. Other than that the only other race I can evaluate of is Sisters of Battle and they're just a cruddier version of the lay Marines. I actually think it's going to be Sisters of contend/Inquisition. I experience a lot of populate would love to have 'Nids (myself included) but given that the expansion is called "Soulstorm" and not something like "The Great Devourer". I'm going with the contend Nuns instead of the Bugs. This is a very good point - Dark advertise was a great name - the Necrons are dark and like to crusade and the Imperium ran a advertise on the Tau so it works. Soulstorm - Dark Eldar like souls and the reaving thereof and so does the Inquisition. Then again. Tyranids storm things like no other. I'd like tyranids but I accept Inquisition/Sister of contend is more likely. It's Dark Eldar. The other race is rumoured to be Sisters of contend. Apparently they can't do the Tyranids with the current engine on DOW they'd be to make DOW 2 to include Nids. Goes without saying. Tyranids would impel! Although there hasn't been much focus on the shadowy dealings of the Emperor's Inquisition apart from the Grey-Knights. I hope it's Tyranids. However perhaps they'll do things a little different and introduce more than two new races?Only Tzeentch truly knows.... i think they shouldnt do nids because they change magnitude engine and everyone who has only a old com would undergo to buy a new com it mght be the inquisition Um. Blizzard can pike off. If you're going to talk about such similarities then GW would have more of a alter to be cross about it seeing as how their creation came first. blizard cant complain they had SM in warcraft 3 as special units o and theres no point in putin anythin but tyranids as the others are just gonna be alterations of SM and Chaos and that would just drink
