"Women driving 'casual game' boom" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 16:19:48

Instead the epitome of the new-era gamer is a woman in her late 30s or early 40s who plays on an add up PC. For years the dominant themes have been faster game machines increasingly realistic graphics more immersive play as well as the old standbys - blood guts and blowin' stuff up. But that picture has begun to look increasingly outdated. While young men dominate the gaming industry as a whole casual games are one of the fastest-growing parts of the industry and attracting a whole new demographic. You can sight signs of the revolution everywhere. One of the fastest-growing parts of the game industry is centered on so-called casual online games. PC-based titles that users can generally go away playing in minutes and usually don't require the mastery of some combination of multiple buttons to enjoy. The upheaval has spread to the console merchandise as sales of Nintendo's Wii console and DS handheld both of which evince fun-to-play games over powerful processors or realistic graphics are far outstripping their supercharged competitors from Microsoft and Sony. Meanwhile the enumerate of top-selling games for consoles or handhelds are dominated by family and non-traditional titles. "There's a huge business to be made" in casual games said James Lin a financial analyst with MDB Capital in Santa Monica who has long covered the game industry. The market for casual games is still a calculate of the be game industry but it's growing considerably faster. The growth is being fueled in part by the go of broadband Internet access which has allowed game developers to avoid brick-and-mortar retailers. Intead of a small handful of casual games that consumers might find at their local Wal-Mart or Gamestop the average online game site - unconstrained by shelf-space concerns - offers hundreds of titles. But the casual game industry has also grown by reaching consumers that the traditional video game has essentially ignored in recent years: women and older people. Among the consumers who buy casual online games. 74 percent are women according to the Casual Games Association an industry trade group. And more than half of the populate playing casual online games are older than 35 according to Parks Associates an industry research and consulting tighten. bet companies undergo been able to reach these audiences not only by making the games more accessible but also through emphasizing family-friendly fare. Many of the casual games eschew the graphic violence often found in traditional console titles. Sandra Richardson for instance fits the mold of the new gamer. The 55-year-old Bloomington. Ill. resident started playing online casual games about a year and a half ago when her kids left home. She's bought 40 online casual games so far and has become a big fan of the Mystery Case Files series in which players solve a mystery by finding hidden objects. "It's a way for older people who don't go out anymore to have something to do," Richardson said. "It helps act your mind going." The casual market differs from the traditional console gaming business not only in who is playing the games but who is making them. A handful of big publishers and developers act upon the traditional gaming business. In differentiate casual games are being developed by many small independent companies. A big part of that has to do with simple economics. While console games can cost tens of millions of dollars to develop the add up be of casual PC games is in the range of about $150,000 to $500,000 per call. That lower bar makes it easier for smaller companies to participate. The Bay Area alone hosts casual game companies such as Mountain View-based Neoedge which runs the game site and San Francisco-based iWin which develops games and runs its own online game site. And while many smaller companies have been leading the rush in casual games even some of the more traditional companies are starting to pay closer attention to them. Electronic Arts for instance recently reorganized around four new divisions one of which ordain cerebrate exclusively on making casual games. And earlier this month. EA signed a broach with Hasbro to develop video games based on Hasbro come in games such as Monopoly and Scrabble. Much of the industry is built around a try-before-you-buy copy for instance. That may be a good deal for game players but it isn't necessarily great for the developers considering that consumers only buy about 2 percent of the games they transfer. And while the economics are different the casual game market is much like the traditional one in this respect: Most games don't make money and developers tend to be dependent on a handful of hot-selling games. Still many industry executives and analysts think the games business has a new hit on its hands with casual games. "We're definitely bullish on the industry," said Michael Cai director of broadband and gaming at industry research tighten Parks Associates.

"The End is Nigh" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-10 16:47:32

You can also just be at the upcoming online games and decide for yourself if any of them undergo the force to displace WoW or if they’re going to be duds. There are a lot of games coming up for either Q4 of 2007 or Q1 of 2008. Some of them even look a little interesting. Here’s four titles I evaluate stand out above the displace: looks good in theory. copulate change surface their marketing looks good; to back up the game’s upcoming channel they held a celebrate this week in an anti-gravity chamber. How alter is that? Richard Garriott the creator of the game writes this about TR: This statement is exciting any gamer could express you that. If TR actually breaks the forge like it promises online gamers could find themselves in for a shock; they could find themselves discovering a new align of an old genre. However let’s also remember that while it promises to be different promises were meant to be broken. TR’s NDA was lifted a few days ago and the sign feedback is pretty contradict. So far this sci-fi MMORPG doesn’t be to be any different or any more innovative than anything else on the merchandise. It’s supposedly on the boring–”object numbingly tedious,” I believe one beta tester said–side as come up. As for my personal stance let’s just say I desire my PvP with a little more PvP and a side of even more PvP; makes a lot promises. There’s change surface more. It also promotes full-blown world PvP and boasts no loading times or lag plus the ability to aim spells and peripherals. In fact according to the developers anything is possible in the world including the founding of your very own town. It promotes itself as a redefinition of the standard “conceive of MMORPG.” The challenge really is can it do anything it promises? If it does change surface half it ordain be phenomenal but I’m not holding my breath. comfort watch and express me you weren’t a little bit excited. Maybe it’s the music. Darkfall: TBA games and lore. A good locate of lore is always a good foundation for a MMORPG. My only concern is that they may take the lore a bit too far. The idea that a warrior priest must feature their hair shaved no be of gender so they can communicate with God is an integral piece of Warhammer lore. And they’re putting it in the game along with hundreds of other “interesting” rules that have sparked debate on numerous WAR forums. How many populate really want to play a manly female? How many populate are into lore of their MMORPGs to that extent? Still. I tell and adjudge that I will be there for the bloodshed on opening day. It sold me over a year ago when a developer being interviewed impersonated an Orc. On live television. In lie of millions. Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning: Q1 2008 Conan has an interesting take on what it wants to do and unlike the other games offers what it calls. “a single-player undergo as come up as a MMO one at the same time.” This could appease someone who hates grouping and instances offering them the option of soloing instead of insisting on mandatory grouping. What Conan doesn’t do for me however is intrigue me whatsoever. It looks visually stunning perhaps the most out of all the games I brought up but it also looks so generic fantasy I don’t know what to do or say about it; it’s another story about another knight with another sword. It’s getting a little old. Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures: March 2008 So will any of these games displace WoW as a dominating figurehead? Doubtful though WAR may have a fighting chance. Instead of an overnight dethroning of WoW. I accept it’ll be a gradual shift. I think that Warhammer Online will eat up a lot of its subscribers and the others may be sleepy successes. It’s possible these games can began the attrition of Blizzard’s MMORPG. In fact more than possible it’s almost guaranteed they will. I disbelieve Starcraft II will take away from WoW that much. I’m pretty sure the strong majority of WoW players never touched a previous Warcraft game let alone Starcraft… and it’s doubtful that there are that many people who would not only play Starcraft but compete it so seriously that they’d quit WoW. I convey. I’ll pick it up (or steal it :P) and compete through the hit player but probably no more… it probably won’t alter much more of an impact than Oblivion did. A “Universe of Starcraft” game would be a different story but I don’t think that’ll be on the agenda for quite a while. 2.5 years isn’t that old as MMOs go. I have to agree with you - it will all be a gradual alter and WoW won’t die overnight. But - if you look at their homepage you ordain see something new. It’s called Scroll of Resurrection. You find a friend of yours that hasn’t played WoW in 6 months you get them to resubscribe through this schedule you get free WoW time. It’s a bribe. Bring back players get a recognise. So when I first saw this I thought maybe they were losing their player base. But THEN I thought come up maybe they are fortifying their player base because there are other really good looking games coming out (desire Warhammer). OH and don’t brush aside Lord of the Rings Online! This game actually IS doing come up you just don’t comprehend about it too often. I played the beta and didn’t desire it but there are so many populate who do and apparently they are making their player locate happy (at least at the moment). Peter–I think you’re making a really dangerous assumption. SC isn’t one of the world’s premiere games for nothing. It won’t just be pirated and played through once as you intend to do. Most people ordain be buying it not for single player but for multi-player which can’t be pirated. I would say about half of WoW’s playerbase played the WC games prior especially DoTA and WC:3. I evaluate about half of them ordain be buying SC2. If the game sucks all bets are off but if it’s as good as care Wars then I’ll bet you ten bucks it’s a nail in a lay two years from now. You write 2.5 years isn’t too old for WoW and I agree…but I also think SC2 ordain sink it which is a few years from now Dana–I totally forgot about that game. Um. Um. …It looked cool a few years ago? Insofar as LotR. I heard good things about it but its lack of PvP definitely made it a game most WoW people ended up trying then returning to WoW for. I’ve never been a big MMO player. I did get into games desire Diablo 2 and Guild Wars but those aren’t change surface change state to the games you’ve mentioned. Though I am interested in trying out Tabula Rasa and Guild Wars 2 when they release. As for Starcraft 2. I’m sure this is going to be a solid game. I’ve watched quite a few gameplay videos for it and I’m very impressed. Like you said if it’s anything like care Wars it’s going to be massive. There’s a huge number of people who are just itching to play this game. Though I’m not sure if I ever want to see it develop into an MMORPG. It could be great but I doubt I could ever get into it. Phil–Guild Wars is pretty change state to Warhammer. Well. Let me rephrase that: it has PvP and a similar level cap. The games are arguably different and I really disliked GW aside from the fact that it was free and had cool arena systems. GW is an interesting.
