At a Microsoft Japan press conference more of the features have been revealed for the upcoming dashboard update. While the information was all in Japanese. Engadget was able to make sense of it all.
The update which will be rolled out next Tuesday. December 4 will include a new way to navigate the dashboard. The 'Games' blade will now contain a "Games Library" option which will contain your Xbox Live Arcade games demos and recently played games. The navigation for this section will be "twist" navigation which is apparently the name for the way you move around the Video Marketplace.
The Xbox Live Marketplace will also be redone with twist navigation with the top level categories including "Recommended Content," "Game Store," "Video Store," and "What's New." Hopefully this will allow for better organization because navigating the Rock Band DLC is going to be a real hassle once there are dozens of albums and hundreds of individual songs to browse through.
The personal profile will be another new feature and will allow for you to include more details about yourself in your Xbox Live profile. A biography favorite links and colors – do with it whatever you would like.
Lastly the ability to remove Xbox Live Arcade trials from your games played list will be provided. Apparently thinks it's a bigger thing than I do as I certainly don't care if my Live profile says I played Joust back in March 2006.
Considering that this is a semi-annual update. I must say that I'm pretty disappointed with the lack of any big features. The feature seems nice but much of it has to do with better organizing things which really isn't particularly exciting.
Don't get me wrong. I think the dashboard needed upgrading in that department but when those are some of the main features in the update – while the PS3 gets regular updates as necessary – I can't help but feel disappointed.
A recent 1UP preview of the PlayStation 3 version of Valve's The Orange Box wasn't the overwhelmingly positive piece you would expect it to be. In the preview. David Ellis refers to the game – which is being ported by an EA team as opposed to Valve itself – as suffering from "a number of technical flaws which at best merely hinder gameplay and at worst make the experience downright unplayable. Framerate is a consistent issue throughout the Half-Life series of games included in The Orange Box."
Portal is a fine port according to the preview while Team Fortress 2 wasn't playable due to server connection errors – not an uncommon occurrence in the Xbox 360 version of the game.
Of course if you're like me and have picked up Rock Band and Guitar Hero III recently you don't want to think about spending any more money on music videogame instruments. The amount of money you have to spend to get the complete experience between these two games is just insane.
[I]t's a crazy game in which you launch a character from a giant slingshot into a downtown area and smash him into stuff and blow stuff up and you snatch Mimes out of the air so you can slam them through plate glass windows and you blast monkeys out the side of a building in an attempt to stop another player's character from successfully crashing into bowling pins and you can play as a dude named Ed in a cow suit and so on and so on…
EA has apparently for these images by now but still. Polygamia is now officially my favorite website that I can’t read. After finding a photoshoot of a nude Polish model with various Xbox 360 accessories there’s now another photoset up featuring more nudie babe goodness. This time the girls are British and the pictures are to promote EA’s Need for Speed: Pro Street. Apparently these pictures featuring models Amii and Becky were featured in a recent issue of the men’s publication. Page 3 an offshoot of The Sun. Once again though the photos and video following the link below are extremely NSFW so much so that the image above is the only one I can post on this PG-13 site. Man. Europe just plain rules.
The Xbox 360's backwards compatibility grew a bit larger today with the November 2007 BC update which apparently required there to be as many old sports games included as possible. It's hard to really pinpoint any big name games because there really aren't (m)any. Playboy the Mansion is noteworthy because well it's Playboy the Mansion.
The total number of Xbox games that are backwards compatible on the 360 is now past 300. One has to wonder if Microsoft will continue to roll out these updates with Xbox Originals set to launch next month.
Are there any remaining Xbox games you want to see added to the back compat list? It's hard to come up with much now that Playboy. The Guy Game and Rocky have been added but I'd still like to see The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind included in a future update.

Undertow has been the #1 Xbox Live Arcade title since it’s release on Thanksgiving. The development team at Chair Entertainment Group was kind enough to send us a list of tips on how to dominate the game. I haven’t had the opportunity to play the full game yet but the demo was enough to sell me on the title. I am often upset after checking out an XBLA title that doesn’t meet my expectations but this one definitely seems to be unique and interesting. If you are looking for a 16-player underwater action-shooter game on the arcade this is it.
1 - If you are playing with a buddy online try to coordinate what units you are. One killer combo is the Destroyer and the Dragoon. The Dragoon can hide inside the Destroyer protecting it from nearby enemies and shooting down enemy torpedoes allowing the Destroyer time to bombard the enemy with its huge explosions.
3 - When trying to take an occupied enemy Control Point swoop in with a fast unit type like the Corsair or the Marine and drop all your depth charges on the enemy. When they die you will have enough time to neutralize the Control Point so the enemy can’t spawn there anymore allowing you to quickly take it.
4 - The Corsair while not as strong as the Dragoon or the Destroyer has an incredible rate of fire at a long (and relatively safe) distance. Try to find pinched-off areas where the enemy will bottleneck their forces keep a steady rate of fire on that section and watch the kills roll in. Even hitting the wall next to an enemy can be effective – Corsairs and Destroyers do a lot of splash damage!
6 - You can’t shoot while using Turbo (X button) but you can use depth charges. Zipping by a pack of enemies for a bombing run is a good way to get some kills. You can hold up to five depth charges!
7 - Control Points don’t have to be yours to get a shutout. Sometimes taking a Control Point to neutral can be advantageous if one is simply trying to deny opponents from spawning. Taking all the Control Points to neutral and then killing all your enemies (before they can get another Control Point of course) is a quick way to win a match.
8 - Use cover. There are areas the two smaller units (Marine and Dragoon) can hide from view. This is a great way to take enemies off guard. Hide in tall grass behind pillars buildings or in clumps of rock and debris.
9 - The five circles at the top represent the Control Points and they’re laid out from left to right according to where they are located in the map. You can see their timers counting down when you’re taking a Control Point. The more team members you have taking a Control Point the faster you’ll take it!
10 - Upgrades are immediate - making you faster and more powerful! It also fills your health bar. Remember that during battle! If it’s late in a match and you’re getting owned remember to check your points. If you have points – use them! Press the Y-Button to enter the upgrade menu select the unit you want and then press the A-Button to upgrade.
BONUS - Communicate! When playing multiplayer put on your headset and talk to your teammates. The best way to decimate your opponents is to communicate your strategies!

David Bowie's new track pack (which is comprised of three songs two of which are covers) is now available on the Xbox Live Marketplace in bundle form for 440 Microsoft Points or individually at 160 Microsoft Points. The release marks what I believe is the first time that the title of a piece of Marketplace content has had to be censored meaning it will subsequently be censored in this news story because A) I don't want to risk getting in trouble and B) I don't actually care about David Bowie and nor does Ron so there's no one to yell at me.
The three songs are Queen ***** (which is apparently listed as "Queen ***" on Live because two more asterisks would create mass hysteria) and Heroes which are the two covers and Moonage Daydream.
PS3 owners it's likely you'll be getting this Rock Band DLC on Thursday with the usual PlayStation Store update so you'll have to wait until then if you want to rock out to David Bowie.
Earlier this month a rumor was going around the net that ZeniMax Media had purchased the domain name “elderscrollsonline com” although the company had yet to comment on even the remote possibility of an Elder Scrolls MMO - the speculation had people either up in arms or so excited that they were doing the pee-pee dance in the streets. While the acquisition of the domain name is indeed true no word of even the possibility of multiplayer or said MMO has been given on the lauded series so the news was filed under “rumor” in most gamers minds.
Today however the rumor is gaining new ground now that ZeniMax Online ,which is the parent company of Bethesda Softworks has announced that it acquired the rights to use Simutronics’ HeroEngine. We are all well aware that the HeroEngine was designed specifically for crafting MMO titles therefore this has given gossip and speculation junkies something more to talk about.
Launched on August 1 with the intention of focusing on the MMO market. ZeniMax Online may actually be working on a new MMO but to jump to the conclusion that it is an Elder Scrolls related game before an official announcement has been issued is just plain silly. Granted it may actually come to fruition but until we all know for sure - we need to maintain a collective form of restraint before we either: a) get our panties in a wad or b) get our hopes up only to be disappointed.
From a personal perspective. I am hoping against all hope that an MMO version never happens as I would rather have a new single-player expansion (or an entirely new game) than see one of my favorite games of all time become the next disappointing MMO. Yes it could be cool but what would the game loose in the process? A lot if you ask me and if they do intend to take the Elder Scrolls online they better make damn sure they do not ruin the franchise as a whole.
Hey who wouldn’t want to punch a presidential hopeful in the face or any politician for that matter? No matter what your political leanings are everyone gets mad enough to warrant the fantasy of said punching and a mobile entertainment site called has launched a game where you can do this called "The Mobile Ring". This is a free mobile phone boxing game that puts Presidential candidates in the ring and while this is not a completely new idea as the first such game was introduced during 2004 the new game boats that it will be taking it to the next level by “weighing the chance of success of each contender based on polling numbers and also through the results of people playing the game” according to TechCrunch.
To give you an idea of how this works lets use Hilary and Barack for an example. With Hilary leading over Barack in the polls knocking out other candidates would give her a higher success rate in the game. Users can also vote on other characters for inclusion in "dark-horse candidates" which will be released at a later date. Although Ron Paul and our favorite leprechaun Dennis Kucinich are not included at this time you can vote on cable television pundits and currently elected White House officials as well.
Want to know the scariest thing about this game? When you look at the video notice the muscles on Hilary. It was enough to make just a little bit of vomit appear in my mouth.

In their latest Greener Electronics Guide. Greenpeace has publicly deemed Microsoft and Nintendo irresponsible and lacking in environmental credentials in reference to electronic waste. Giving Nintendo a 0/10 rating for its policies and practices on toxic chemicals and takeback. Greenpeace has stated that “”The Greener Electronics Guide is our way of getting the electronics industry to face up to the problem of e-waste. [and] Nintendo completely fails to show any environmental credentials and Microsoft and Philips do little better.” This is the first time that Greenpeace has included consoles and televisions in their report alongside PCs and mobile phones.
“Companies shouldn’t be under any illusions that we won’t check up on their claims of green greatness,” commented Iza Kruszewska campaigner for Greenpeace International.
According to Greenpeace. Nintendo has “no voluntary takeback of products no information on banned products no information on how the company communicates with its supply chain and no policy on use of vinyl plastics,”and that the gaming giant scored so horribly on these fronts that there is “infinite room for improvement.”
Microsoft faired better with a score of 2.7/10 due to the company’s chemical management status and the timeline they have set to phase out PVCs by the year 2011.
I finally had the chance to play Battlestar Galactica in-depth on the Xbox Live Arcade. The game is loosely based on episodes and stories from the new television show. Although I am not really a fan of the current television show. I loved the old show when I was a kid. This download costs 800 MP which isn’t a terrible deal for what you are getting.
Campaign mode includes 10 levels that can be beat in about 60-90 minutes depending on how good you are. The mission objectives aren’t as in-depth as I would have liked but they aren’t the worst either. You aren’t going to need any kind of strategy to get through these levels. The levels are 3-D-like and look really good for a XBLA title.
Multiplayer seems interesting but it took me a long time to find another gamer who was actually playing BG. You can fly different ships in multiplayer which adds a little value to gameplay. Again there’s nothing complicated about this game whatsoever. You basically fly your ship around firing missiles or your guns at enemies.
For me the best part of this game is that it still holds a little nostalgic value for fans of the original series and film like myself but it really doesn’t have much of a story behind it. If you are looking for some basic casual space shooting fun you may enjoy this. Just don’t expect anything too advanced. Prior to the release. I was hoping that Battlestar Galactica was going to be the next great XBLA title. It turned out to be an average game.
Presentation (4) What drops my opinion of the game’s presentation is the total lack of a story. They put together a functional game that is interesting yet lacks some of the fundamental elements that gamers look for these days.
Replayability (3) Once you beat the game in a little over an hour there’s really no point to replay the missions. Multiplayer will give you some reasons to keep playing but good luck finding people actually playing it at the same time.
Overall (5/10) This is basically right around average for an XBLA title. I was hoping for much more but it’s not a terrible price for what you get. I’d suggest playing the demo before purchasing this title. As far as space shooters go on the arcade. I still believe that Aegis Wing is the best available.
branding and EA logo featured prominently and a spokesperson for EA told GamesIndustry biz that “We regret that these images slipped through the proper EA approval process. They were not appropriate for our brand. [and] the original site has been taken down this morning.”
