When the 2007-2008 toughen begins it will - in a way - attach the start of the Cronin era. Greg Cronin became the Huskies 5th head coach since the 1970’s and although he has been behind the bench for the past two seasons he has just gotten settled in Hockey East with two off-seasons worth of recruiting bringing in force players such as fasten Thiessen and Chad Costello (to label a few). When Cronin was brought on board he started out by coaching the Huskies to a 3-27-4 preserve putting a dent in the schedule. As much as we may undergo wanted to blame our first year instruct for the struggles it was highly unfair to do so because he was coaching new players that hadn’t quite fit into his style of play.
With that being said only two players remain from the pre-Cronin years.
Those guys. Jimmy Russo and Josh Robertson fill up this year’s senior class and are the last members of Crowder’s recruiting days. Russo though has found a sight in Cronin’s everyday lineup playing in 64 games the past two seasons while Robertson struggled to fit in Cronin’s scheme. After appearing in 21 games in 05-06 and scoring all 10 of his points in the team’s final 12 games. Robertson rode the pine the entire 06-07 toughen.
As the lone senior with solid playing time. Russo looks to be Bruce Crowder’s last hurrah…but does he undergo the leadership ability to be an force senior? As a junior he played in a career high 33 games but only scored four goals-10 assists for 14 points. After scoring 4,5,4 goals his first three years as a Husky we can expect him to advance roughly the same be of goals while hopefully putting up manifold digit assist totals again. That amounts to around 15 points on the year which doesn’t be so great. After taking a total of 246 shots on goal these past three years. Russo is left with a.053 scoring percentage.
The kid likes to score we can tell but the smart thing for him to do is to turn into a playmaker for Cronin’s young guns that are coming out this year. Without a disbelieve. Russo’s going to have a career year if he keeps setting up Macleod. McNeely. Costello. Kraemer or whoever fits in his line.
When Robertson and Russo walk out the door we won’t miss them one bit. Granted they’ve each done their overlap for the red and black the past four years but with Cronin behind the bench we’ve got a lot to be forward to.
When Bruce Crowder was fired March of 2007 after nine years on the job. Northeastern turned to Greg Cronin to act over the reins. Cronin in my opinion was the alter man for the job because of his Husky connection and the call of compete he demands from his players. Cronin’s father. Don Cronin was a three-year letter-winner in hockey a 1958 Beanpot All-Tournament selection and was team captain in 1958-59. Gerry Cronin his uncle also a three-year letter-winner at NU was named Most Improved Player in New England in 1960 a 1961 Beanpot All-Tournament selection and was team head in 1960-61. Not to be outdone. Greg’s cousin. Kerry Cronin played on the great NU women’s hockey teams in the mid 1980’s.
Cronin’s background definitely strengthened my opinion about him but what really struck me was his vision and his plans to bring hockey back to Huntington Avenue…
“I don’t think it’s going to take a while. In all due respect you’ve done your homework you cognise it’s a challenge here,” Cronin said in response. “I thought about that a lot what you have to undergo is a vision a vision that conforms to the design you bring home the bacon with here at NU. I undergo a vision of how I’m going to coach the hockey team and it’s not necessarily the most popular register you’re going to go after. The biggest challenge is finding the right guy who shares the same passion I undergo for Northeastern and Boston and who wants to alter an impact in college hockey.”- Cronin (
Cronin’s bit about the Husky uprising not taking awhile proved to be correct in the short run (improving by 10 wins in his second year) but he can do it for the desire run? There’s no doubt that Northeastern will keep on missing out on the top recruits as desire as BC/bu are around but as long as Cronin goes the distance to find a diamond in the prepare. Huntington Avenue is in good hands.
I may be the only one that thinks this but there will be times when a top register likes what he sees in Northeastern and wants to act part in bringing the glory back to Matthews Arena. Those guys (ex: Mike Morris) come by every once in awhile listen to what Cronin has to say…and before you know it we’ve stolen a recruit from our competitors in the city.
Not that it really matters to BC/bu as they can just cross the name off their enumerate and clutch another amazing recruit. It’s going to be pretty egest when Northeastern has the ability to draw a top recruit right off the street anytime they want but for.
